iCloud keeps overwriting new work with previous Word files - help!

In the last couple of days I've noticed that when I work on one of my Macs (desk tops at home and work, and on a MB), when I open the file on another machine, it does not open the newer saved version on the previous machine. It overwrites the older version on whichever machine I'm accessing the Cloud on instead of opening the newer version. I'm on deadlines and keep losing important work. It's very maddening. I don't have Time machine. I have a huge iCloud storage account - so it's not that. I'm on a 27in late 2013 Macs at home and work, and 2017 MB. I'm running Catalina 10.15.7. Word for Mac 16.66.1 (on a 365 licence). I don't use OneDrive, just iCloud.

Any help gratefully received. This is my 40th year as a Mac user but I'm not very IT-literate (which was always the reason for choosing Macs cos they just worked ... well, not any more)!

Hey there AntAppleToTheCore,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that when you open the file from a different device after updating it on a previous device, it instead opens an older version. If that's right, was there a time when it opened the most up to date version of files?
  2. Have you noticed this only occurring if you make updates from only one specific device?
  3. Do all devices have iCloud Drive enabled, and signed into the same Apple ID for iCloud?

Cheers!
