Question About CleanMyMac X

I've seen several comments about not using this software as it is BAD for your Mac. If so, why can one get it on the Apple Apps Store?

I'm looking for something that can uninstall an app COMPLETELY, without a lot of "work" on my part.

I'm running macOS Ventura on a 2019 iMac.

Thanks,

Bryan

If you are looking for a clean and safe way to remove applications completely there is this free app called 'AppCleaner'

One caveat to be aware of.....when using it, make sure you check to insure it won't remove files that are needed by other apps you use that you do not want removed. EG-Adobe products. If you remove one Adobe product it might choose all the adobe files for other Adobe apps you want to keep. You just need to be aware of that when choosing apps to remove. Worse case, is if it did remove files for an app you wanted to keep, you could just re-install that one.

Do not install third party apps that claim to clean, manage, boost performance, protect, etc. They use system resources while providing no benefit. And they may cause problems..

I guess the answer to why it is available in the app store is the same as why any app is available in the app store, money. Because an app is in the app store does not mean it is a good app.

Good advise from @ Kurt Lang as related to Adobe applications

and >>

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - >>>> using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last ) <<<<

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues

Part 1 of 2

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster.

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Screen Shot of Apple Apps Store

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

1 - Disk Cleaner

This will include CleanMyMac , aka “ BrickMyMac “

MacKeeper,

Dr Cleaner Pro Plus

Open Cleaner one Pro

Macmechanic

Clean my Mac x.

Read some of the posting and arrive at your own conclusions.

As mentioned from early in this posting " removed as per Developers Instructions  " is usually the first step in this process

Okay here's the EtreCheck report. I've had following problems in past few days: Restarts, can't open Apple App Store, can't open Calendar, can't run Safari, freezes while in Mail. These seem to happen randomly and not all at once. Have several "Panic Reports" for the various issues.

FYI, my iMac was recently "overhauled" by a local Apple Store support. They replaced a logic board, hard drive, flash storage, and memory. (They also inadvertently broke the screen and had to replace that!)

The reason I brought it in was for similar problems after upgrading to macOS Ventura!

Appreciate any help. I recognize I may need to bring this back to the Apple Store. I'd like to avoid this if possible.

Thanks,

Bryan

If I may suggest before we move forwards with this.

The version of Etrecheck used to produce this report is probably a version once available from the Apple Apps Store.

EtreCheck version: 5.7.2 (5247)

It is Old and not as full featured as the Current version 6.8.1 .

That 6.8.1 is only available from the Developer

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

In good faith - am supplying as recent report from my machine

We will work with what has been presented so far.

Should the User decide to upgrade Etrecheck to current version and re-run the Full Report again, we are more than willing to review that report at a later time

EtreCheck version: 5.7.2 (5247) is Hobbled version previous available on the Apple Apps Store. The Developer has since removed this version and Only Offers newer versions of there Application Directly from the Developer

Problem: Computer is restarting

Description:Computer restarting. Sluggish in Mail; occasional problems opening Safari, Apple App Store, Calendar, Messages.

Q - Runaway process - A process is using a large percentage of your CPU.

A - This generally is indicative of Third Party Application(s) that need attention. Some maybe out dated and or no longer fully compatible with the version of macOS it is installed on

Q - Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed that could be adware and should be reviewed.

A - The moniker Adware in above maybe in direct relationship to the Out Dated Version of Etrecheck Application and may not appear in a newer version of the same Appliation

Q - More than one antivirus app - This computer has multiple antivirus apps installed.

Q - Antivirus software: Apple, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes

A - Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include BitDefender

Read some of the posting and arrive at your own conclusions.

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)

iMac Model: iMac19,1

3.7 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 (i5-9600K) CPU: 6-core

24 GB RAM - Upgradeable

Q  - disk0 - APPLE HDD ST2000DM001 2.00 TB (Mechanical - 7200 RPM)

Q - disk1 - APPLE SSD SM0128L 121.33 GB (Solid State - TRIM: Yes)

A - Fusion Drive and the sad fact Fusion Drives are going be much slower than an all SSD Configuration.  Even the 7200 RPM Drive in this computer is still a Platter / Mechanical drive that will always be spinning to keep up with the demands of both the OS and the User

As the User has already had the drives services by Apple Authorized Service Personal not doubt there is no interest in investing more $$ to change the Drives to All SSD ?

In which case, a good place to shop for a compatible Drive Enclosure and Large SSD Drive to fit the enclosure  plus specific to this computer would be www.owc.com

Q - Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.virtualbox.startup.plist

/Library/Application Support/VirtualBox

 VBoxDrv.kext - org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv (Oracle America, Inc., 5.2.26)

org.virtualbox.startup.plist (? 700b9385 - installed 2019-08-18)

A - If you're looking for the latest VirtualBox 6.1 packages, see VirtualBox 6.1 builds. Version 6.1 will remain supported until December 2023.

Q - Plugin: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin

A - No Longer supported. Remove it

Q - Surfshark. WireGuard - version 4.7.1 (SURFSHARK LTD)Application: /Applications/Surfshark.app - version 4.7.1

A - Running any Commercial VPN is akin to passing over all your data, personal info including credit cards number to a Service that purports to Hide you personal information while on the Internet. It is a business link any other business and the goal is to make money. Some, not all,  of these VPNs have been know to Harvest the Subscriber or Purchaser’s Info and resell that to Others for Profit.
