Files inside folder have been replaced with a series of index files. Has anyone had this issue?

The files inside a folder on my external hard drive are suddenly missing and have been replaced with a bunch of 0.index live.0 and tmp files. Has anyone had this issue and been able to get your files back?

If you have not already done so, I recommend you re-build the spotlight index of your entire Volume.

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support

Once completed (as indicated by spotlight able to search again) Try to Restore those files from a known-good backup.

Then observe to see whether they get clobbered again quickly. If they do, Apple Support needs to connect you with a specialist to investigate.

The files do not open.

The external drive is ExFAT

It was never connected to a Windows machine.

I should also mention that all other files on this drive seem to be fine. Only this particular folder has the issue.

I can't think of anything I did to cause this to happen. I've been using the drive with no issues up until yesterday when i went to access the folder to open the project file (Premiere Pro) the files were missing an the listed files above were in their place.

You work together with the first responder toward a solution. You can point them to the great steps and documentation you have already taken, and posted results that are already on the forums. You point out that the steps you have already taken should have provided relief, but did not. (They generally use that documentation, but typically do not take our conclusions. They have their own more-rigorous processes.)

If your problem is not solved by the 'first responder', be polite and professional and insist they forward your case to a specialist. Agreeing that it is solved (or rolling over and playing dead) when NOT solved -- gets you nowhere.
