Files inside folder have been replaced with a series of index files. Has anyone had this issue?

The files inside a folder on my external hard drive are suddenly missing and have been replaced with a bunch of 0.index live.0 and tmp files. Has anyone had this issue and been able to get your files back?

Why are some random files in Finder suddenly hidden on Mac? Why are some random files in some folders on Finder suddenly 'Hidden'? It looks like they have been deleted (when I have not deleted them). When I try to reload them from backup, I get the 'do you want to replace the existing file?' message, which tells me that the files are there but I CANNOT SEE THEM! [Re-Titled By Moderator]

Right, but will the missing project files return? That’s the issue. I’m missing important files that were suddenly replaced with these index files.

When I loaded my backups they were fine then POOF the next time I went in the same thing happened.
