airdrop "contacts only" doesn't work

Airdrop only works between my iPhone and Macbook/iMac if I have "everyone for 10 minutes" selected. All of the aforementioned devices show up as options to send to, but they won't actually send anything. It's faster for me to send things over email than it is to go through the convoluted process of changing the setting anytime I want to airdrop something.

my devices are all within 1 foot of one another, connected to the same wifi

I've tried restarting everything.

all of my devices have the most recent OS.

Hi there bbpoizon,

If you are unable to use AirDrop between your devices when both devices are set to receive from Contacts Only, first ensure you set up your contact card on both of these devices since this can cause this to occur. These articles show how to do this:

Add your contact info on iPhone - Apple Support

Set up your My Card in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Also, this information from How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad can help isolate and resolve unexpected behavior like this:

Before you begin
* Make sure that the person you're sending to is nearby and within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.
* Check that you and the person you're sending to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If either of you have Personal Hotspot on, turn it off.
* Check if the person you're sending to has their AirDrop set to receive from Contacts Only. If they do, and you're in their Contacts, they need to have your Apple ID's email address or mobile number in your contact card for AirDrop to work.
* If you're not in their Contacts, have them set their AirDrop receiving setting to Everyone in order to receive the file.
You can put your AirDrop receiving setting to Contacts Only or Receiving Off at any time to control who can see your device and send you content in AirDrop.

We hope that helps!
