I’ve heard rumours of the ability to pair Apple Watches with iPads in iOS 17/WatchOS 10. My son would like an Apple Watch but doesn’t have a phone. Can anyone confirm that this is true? We don’t do betas for updates so I’m not sure whether this is a feature or not. Thanks!

This will be my last comment. It's great to see you googled an answer. But what you've surmised from that google search, I'm sure is an attempt to prove that an iPad should be able to pair with an Apple Watch. Which is, after all, the entire point of this thread. The fact is an Apple Watch cannot, nor has it ever had a way to pair with an iPad. You did make a point previously that to make phone calls a device needs to have voice and data which iPhone has. iPad doesn't. That's what I mean by saying an iPad doesn't have a cellular radio like iPhone does.
Anything else is purely semantic and doesn't help anyone in this thread who simply want to know if they can pair an Apple Watch with an iPad. The answer is an emphatic NO, they cannot pair an Apple Watch with an iPad.
If anyone here is not happy about that, arguing with only other users, none of whom have anything to do with Apple, nor why Apple makes things work as they do, is a waste of time and pointless.

You can not Connect any iPad to an Apple Watch, ⌚️ it will only connect to an iPhone
Make sure before you buy the watch to check if it is compatible with your phone

Yes you can but you will not have all the features that you would have on the iPhone
iPads have Apple Fitness+ which does pair with Apple Watch.
iOS 17 has not been released and discussing it here on this forum is not permitted. We are all users here like you. We don't have any inside knowledge. My guess is no, you won't be able to pair an iPhone with an iPad. But that's my guess. And adding the health app to iPad, it Apple does that, would not in my opinion be indicative that Apple Watch will be able to pair with an iPad. It would just give another option for seeing one's health data.
Hate to say it but you need an iPhone (minimum SE model and running iOS 17.x) .. this simple fact renders the Apple Watch not a useable piece of wearable tech but just a glorified remote control.
Unfortunately Apple seem to want to go this way with their products (it pains me as I have been using their tech since the early '90s) ... but simply put things like the latest generation iPhone, the Watch and some of the other ephemera are just not worth the money.
Well, my phone is in for repair now, I have my iPad and a Mac mini. So are you saying I neeed to pair it with my iPhone 13 and then re-pair it to my IPhone 15 pro once it’s back? Rather than the iPad that’s here ?

Tried what? To pair it with an iPad? Given Apple Watch is going to have its 10 year anniversary this year and Apple still has NEVER engineered Apple Watch to pair with an iPad for many obvious reasons, feel free to put in a feature request, but don't expect it to ever happen. The biggest reason of all is iPad does NOT have a cellular radio, like an iPhone does. iPad is NOT a cell phone. So pairing an Apple Watch to an iPad won't work at all.
I'm sorry, but you are completely wrong. A cellular iPad gets data from a cellular connection, but it does NOT, nor has ANY iPad EVER had a cellular radio. Without an iPhone a cellular iPad cannot make phone calls. It has NEVER been able to make phone calls on its own. That is why Apple created Continuity Services so you could piggy back off the cellular radio of an iPhone, which an iPad DOES NOT have. All you get from a cellular iPad is data from a cellular provider when you are not able to be connected to Wifi. Which is why you can't pair an Apple Watch to an iPad.
You don't have to believe me. But I'm 100% right.
