Final Cut Pro 10.6.6 Has just decimated a two year project which was due to be premiered on YouTube tonight. Can it be salvaged? ?

Hello Everyone

If Tom or Luis are on here I'm hoping it's possible maybe? The only thing being is it seems to be getting progressively worse. I've tried to alleviate the damage by downloading a 10.6.5 from Time Machine and loading the main library into that then realised of course that all the updated files are no longer readable and are now rendered utterly useless.

That was the first sickening jolt to my nervous system, the second I suppose quite understandably, is that the entire iMac seems to have now taken a rather nervous stance with regards to loading anything into an old version of an editing software it has effectively said goodbye to, and is constantly crashing as though it has been electrocuted every time the enter key is pressed.

And of course what feast is not complete without its Jester? No surprise now then to see that Uriah Heap of happiness, the spinning beachball making its untimely and most unwelcome appearance, halting every move I make for a good thirty seconds before allowing traffic through so to speak.

And if things couldn't get any worse a third whammy has hit with profound implications to my sanity and the whole project I have so painstakingly worked on for the last twenty two months.....

A large number of plug ins have decided to shut down one by one but the system does not identify them by name, instead it merely mutters a code and the name of the Company that has produced them. This project has utilised the services of hundreds of these gallant effects from all corners of the special visual FX globe I honestly wouldn't know where to begin.

So like orphaned rats deserting this sinking ship, I sigh with despair, stand, salute them and head towards the fridge where a bottle of ice cold Corona lies in state, a small brightly coloured lime at its helm I look up at the clock and sigh once more, 10:49 am GMT/BST Thursday June 8th 2023 It's my Birthday today and I am 63 years old. I try to smile away a small tear desperately trying to trickle down upon my cheek but alas to no avail.

Thanks for reading everyone It's probably best if I wait and see if there any solutions being proffered and if anyone else is having these problems? The enormity of this has been a little too much to bear, and I'm afraid I don't like the new version of Final Cut very much at this moment it has to be said.

You could try launching 10.6.5 and opening a backup of the library from before you updated.

As you probably know, FCP automatically makes backups of the library you are working on, roughly every 15 minutes, and saves them by default in ~/Movies/Final Cut Backups in a folder named after the library, and with a timestamp.

These backups have only the library structure, but they should work directly if the media is external; if the media is inside the library, we are going to have a little more work, but we can get it back.

And, sorry to say, but doing an update without backing up and in the eve of completing a major project...

Hello Ian

Sorry yes I should have been a little clearer on that, Well they're still happening and mostly consist of the new 10.6.6 version loading which takes a while, and then it will commence a validation of the library of your choosing, once it has completed validating there follows a very powerful update of all the files in that library lots of flashing light blue and dark blue in the long process bar and this too takes quite a long time sit appears to repeat this process a few times..

It's worth mentioning again that once it starts this process it effectively updates the library into a 10.6.6 only library thus making it now impossible to return to any older version of Final Cut Pro. The next step it would appear is to load all the plug ins pertaining to that library which it verifies and may come back to you with a list of plug ins that will need updating . in my situation last week this never happened and soon afterwards it crashed and from then on repeatedly so.

Weird thing was it was random, sometimes it would let you into the library even let you start work and then after 10 mins it would crash, other times it would validate update and the 2 seconds later crash. and it continued to crash every day until I turned the clock back to 10.6.5 and thanks to Luis suggestion rebuilt a new library in 10.6.5 and have been working hard to bring my project back up to speed. It's a slow process and I don't think it's my imagination but the old version doesn't work anywhere near the speeds it was working at a week ago/ It's sluggish takes ages to render and it's almost as if the system is rejecting it.

So I've been reading that there are some problems with events and projects in the new version causing these intermittent crashes do we have any further updates on them from Apple at all or is it still quiet. Its a shame because the new HD colour system looks incredible for the brief time I had with it and can't wait to utilise it on my film when FCP gets its feet back on the ground.

Cheers

Ian
