My iPad started to emit clear smoke Is it simply overheating, or is there a bigger issue?

Clear smoke came out of my iPad, is it just overheating or is it serious? It is no longer smelling like smoke, smoking, or even too hot. It still works too. There are some cracks. It’s a mini 6 that I bought new last year. It also stopped having problems when I unplugged it. Is it because it’s a laptop USB-C?

As a safety and fire risk concern, STOP using that iPad, immediately, and make an apppointment with your nearest, “local”, Apple Store location for a free full diagnosis.

DO NOTHING with this iPad. DO NOT charge the battery, either!

ANY smoke coming from an iPad or any computing/electronics device IS NOT normal.

Use the support link, in the upper right hand corner, of these support community Webpages, to make an appointment with your nearest, “local” Apple Store.

Your iPad could be seriously damaged.

Do not attempt to charge or use your iPad.

You would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assess your iPad, Power Adapter and cable(s):

Alternatively, seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page - or using this link:

This just happened to me. iPad was idling, screen turned off, NOT plugged in - and it started sparking and smoking up from inside like fireworks. I just chucked it away from me in fear of an explosion - but thankfully that didnt happen. Sparks kept coming out with an intense amount of chemical smoke.

I was lucky it happened next to me while I was awake. i usually fall asleep watching videos on it - it could have EASILY set something on fire.

What on earth just happened?

Your iPad battery has suffered a catastrophic failure due to a fault, causing extreme heat to be generated.

While extremely rare, faults of this nature can and do occur. It is perhaps worth noting that this type of battery failure, while rare, is common all types of devices that incorporate Li-ion batteries.

Whilst you are unlikely to try, do not attempt to use the iPad. Certainly do not connect it to its Power Adapter. Keep the iPad dry - and away from combustible materials.

Contact Apple Support using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page - and seek instructions.

Alternatively, you might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to take appropriate action:
