Weak security message

I changed my security settings based on the information on here and it no longer says I have a weak signal but it still won’t let me connect any Apple device to the Internet. I have to keep using my data. So Apple are you buying me a new router?

Apple isn’t here, and Apple isn’t buying you a new router. And if your router has weak security it is weak for EVERY DEVICE using the router, not just your iPhone. The iPhone is the only one telling you it is weak.

This is NOT an iPhone problem; it is a problem with the settings on your Wi-Fi router.

A "Weak Security" notification means that your Wi-Fi router is not configured correctly. There is a new feature in iOS 14 and later and Mac OS Big Sur (11) and later that checks and displays a message if your router is not using the most up-to-date security settings. Note that your router has always had weak security, you just didn’t know about it until now.

See this Apple support article for how to configure it correctly—>Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support, specifically the section headed Security. And don't forget to configure your range extenders (if any) also!

After you change the router settings you should Forget the network in your phone settings and reconnect.

Note also that weak security does not interfere with using Wi-Fi, it is just a warning. Your Wi-Fi should still work normally, and, if it doesn’t, it is not because of the weak security message.

Do your devices work on other networks? If they do there is some other router setting that is messed up. Here are a couple of candidates:

  • DHCP Daemon in the router that assigns IP addresses crashed - FIX: Remove all power from the router for 15-30 seconds to force it to reload
  • MAC filtering (AKA Access Control) is enabled - Either disable it (it’s useless, anyway, so why not?), or make sure the Wi-Fi addresses of all of your devices is on the Allowed list.

Here’s a simple check for the DHCP daemon: On a phone go to Settings/Wi-Fi and tap on the i next to the network name. If the first 2 triads of the IP address are 169.254 the DHCP daemon isn’t working.

If you really think you need MAC filtering go to the Wi-Fi settings on your devices and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address.
