be sure you don't have a firewall rule that blocks /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AuthKit.framework/Versions/A/Support/akd from connecting to domain apple.com
By the time I received this I had accessed my macbook, by a different route and one which I think other users will find useful.
Error connecting to apple id server can't sign into MacBook Pro after turning it off
These are the step that I took and my macbook, functions much better:
Selected middle one and could change password to simple one lowercase and numbers
Hope that helps others, as this seems to be a common problem.
