If it's expired. it means it's over. There's nothing left to cancel. It has ended, and is completely inactive now.

If your subscription was unable to be charged for any reason, and it expired because of that, you are still responsible for the pending payment. The pending charge puts your account in bad standing and prevents you from accessing other iTunes or App Store services such as Updating apps.

You must add a verifiable payment method to your account to complete the pending charge. Once it's completed successfully, you can then access the other App Store services such as updating apps.

Yes, I can help!

If your subscription says it has "expired," it typically means it's already been cancelled and won't renew. However, if you're having trouble and want to ensure it's cancelled:

1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.

2. Tap on your Apple ID profile at the top.

3. Tap on "Subscriptions."

4. Find the subscription in question and tap on it.

5. If there's an option to cancel, tap "Cancel Subscription."

If you're just trying to update a free app and it's related to this subscription issue, try logging out of the App Store and logging back in.

If the issue persists, consider contacting Apple Support directly or visiting an Apple Store for assistance.

The original poster, back in June, explained that there is no "Cancel Subscription" option, that it says "Expired". As Phild0124 explained, this means that the subscription has already been canceled.

Phil, Apple has clarified that if an app subscription indicates "expired," you won't be billed for it on the upcoming payment due date.

Correct.

The discussion isn't about Apple services but about a specific app subscription that has been cancelled. If it states "expired," it signifies a prior cancellation. It's misleading to suggest that Apple withholds services like app updates simply because a subscription was cancelled.

I never said that. Correct and successful cancellation of a Subscription does not in any way result in the withholding of services. That only happens if the subscription was attempted to be charged but never actually paid. This can happen, if the subscription was cancelled less than 24 hours before its set to renew, and the payment method cannot be charged for any reason at that point.

Apple might only take such actions if a user removes their payment method from their Apple account. In such cases, automatic subscription cancellations or potential update prevention might occur. However, it's likely the developers, not Apple, who halt updates if a card is removed, possibly after communicating with Apple.

No. Developers have nothing to do with charges through Apple's platform. The subscription in question may be stopped by the platform, not the developers.

In addition to that, the account can now be in bad standing if there's a pending payment that was not completed.

One cannot remove the payment method, if its the only one on the account, and there is still an active subscription. The system won't allow you to do this. However, charging can fail if the payment method is blocked from he issuer's side for any reason or has an issue such that payment cannot be successfully completed.

If a subscription cannot be successfully charged, it will halt automatically in Apple's system. The developers have nothing to do with this.

If it was halted, and enough time passes it may expire and stay expired and not resume, and will not renew even when the pending payment is completed. The pending payment must still be completed.

The point here is, if there was a pending payment that was unable to be charged, the account will not be able to access the store services. This may or may not have anything at all to do with the subscription in question. The assumption it has anything to do with the cancelled subscription came from Jason in his original post. I just explain what could happen, not what absolutely did happen.

Cancelling a subscription correctly and with enough time before its set to renew, will never result in services being withheld.

A few days ago I tried to cancel my subscription, but it would not allow me. Now when I go in, I try to cancel, but it says my subscription has expired now they will charge me.

If its expired, it means it was cancelled, and will not be charging you again.

Why do you assume this charge is for that particular subscription? And not for something else entirely?

As has been abundantly explained in this very thread, if it actually expired, it could not have charged you.

Where are you seeing these charges exactly?

What do they appear they are for?

If they just say "apple.com/bill" what makes you think they are for the cancelled subscription specifically?

Are you sure they are not for some other active subscription?

hello,
i have the following problem: i have cancelled my subscriptions via settings->subscription-> active subscriptions. one of them was still in the free trial phase. Now I have received a bill where all subscriptions were paid on the day I cancelled them. Why did this happen, especially with the subscription that was still in the free phase?

As Apple tells you, you need to cancel 24 hours before the subscription renews.
