Apple News automatically opening when Safaro opens

When I open or re-open Safari, Apple News opens at the same time. The app doesn't open on my desk top, it just shows as open in Recent Items & Force Quit. I don't have Apple News in startup items & haven't been able to figure out how to stop it. Is there any way to stop Apple News from doing this? (intel Mac Ventura 13.3) Thanks for any help.

Hey there Blurbette,

That's a strange thing to occur, and we'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When did this start to occur?
  2. Are any other apps behaving this way when opened?
  3. While you have macOS 13.3 installed, the latest version is macOS 13.4. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update macOS on Mac

Cheers!

Hey Blurbette,

Thanks for those details!

Do you have Handoff enabled on all of your devices? That is the only setting that could cause this behavior. Here's how to check: Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices - Apple Support

If it isn't Handoff, we recommend testing this behavior on your Mac while booted into Safe Mode. This prevents certain extensions from loading when your Mac starts up and can help isolate the issue: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Let us know the results! Take care.

Hi bruno75,

Thanks for the quick response.

1) It may have started happening with Ventura, but I'm not entirely sure.

2) Apple News is the only app that is opening with Safari, although this morning it opened when I first connected to wifi. My subjective observation is that when it does open with Safari, Safari opens very slowly.

3) None of the previous updates to Ventura I've installed have addressed the problem.

I usually check Apple News on either my phone or iPad in the morning before booting my desktop. Is it possible there's a setting on either of those other devices that might be causing the problem with my desktop?

Thanks

Hi all,

I checked Handoff and didn't have it enabled on any of my devices. So I booted in Safe Mode, connected to wifi, opened Safari and didn't have the problem. I restarted my computer, went through the same steps, and Apple News didn't show up in either Recent Items or Force Quit.

Hopefully the issue is now fixed, although I do wonder how booting in safe mode sometimes fixes odd things!

Many thanks,

Blurbette
