Mac Pro 2013 reboots while sleeping OS Monterey

I’ve seen some other threads that are locked or marked as solved, but did anyone figure out this restart issue with Monterey and the 2013 MacPro?

I’m on the last version of Monterey and it’s the last OS available for the unit. Like others, this only became an issue after upgrading to Monterey. Never had an issue before and it’s been consistent with restarting after the display is asleep or it sits idle.

Thought I’d reboot a thread 😊

Kernel panic, even under what appear to be the same circumstances, is not ONE problem, it is one of Thousands of problems.

Kernel Panic Reports are stored at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

If you copy and paste that string into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

it will take you to the Folder where those reports are stored.

They are named with Date&Time and start or end in ‘panic’

If you find one, please post the entire report here, by using the “additional text” Icon in the reply footer (looks like a paper with writing).

Please don’t post more about 20 lines of any other types of reports — they are interminable, and any information useful for this purpose is on the first screenful.

That report, machine check detected by multiple processors with status 4 or 5, is a textbook Uncorrectable RAM Error on Mac Pro with Xeon processor.

Test the following Energy Saver settings.

Check "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping......" and only allow the display(s) to Turn off after 10 or 15 minutes during the day.

Then test manual computer Sleep from the Apple Drop Down Menu or Shut Down the Mac Pro at night.

It may also help to send feedback to Apple about this issue.

I have quite a few reports in the log, but none of them have "panic". I have a few that start with Kernal and end with GPUshut and shutdown stall.

It is definitely related to the energy settings. It often would restart after the display would sleep and would crash trying to wake up the display unit and computer. It would sit with a black screen after moving the mouse or hitting the keyboard. It would send a signal to the display, but it never lights up and then just hangs until it reboots or I have to force shut it down.

It does random restarts after leaving the room and coming back to the login screen on the display if left idle. That's when I would get the "your computer restarted because of a problem" once logged back in and how I would know it crashed. It's also crashed while being parked on the login screen if it went idle and slept.

I did have it crash a couple of times in the middle of working in audio software (Cubase), but that one hasn't repeated since that one day it happened and I believe was related to how the thunderbolt buses were loaded.

okay so just use the system report to check the Ramm while working or if it shows “empty”. Thanks!

I’m surprised I’m having an issue with bad Ramm since it’s all apple.

Thanks Grant! Is there a way to test the RAMM? I’ve run the diagnostic several times and nothing comes up. I read the thread and I’ll check to see if something shows as described, but if not, I’m not sure how to determine what’s bad.
