The system requirements for the Magic Mouse say that the iMac needs
Magic Mouse - Black Multi-Touch Surface - Apple
You connect the Magic Mouse to your Mac using a Lightning to USB-A cable. These come in 0.5 meter, 1 meter, and 2 meter lengths (there's a pop-up size menu on the Apple Store page). (There might be third-party cables which would work, or you might be able to daisy-chain the cable that Apple included in the box with a USB-C to USB-A adapter.)
Lightning to USB Cable (1 m) - Apple
When you plug the mouse into the Mac, the two will automatically pair, and the mouse will recharge its battery. You could probably recharge the mouse from any other standard USB port, but you'll plug it into the Mac for the pairing. To check the charge level, you can use Bluetooth Preferences or Keyboard Preferences. Once the mouse is reasonably charged, you can unplug the cable.
Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac - Apple Support
One very quirky thing about the Magic Mouse is that the Lightning port is on the bottom, which keeps you from using the mouse while it is being charged. I much prefer the arrangement on the Magic Keyboard – where the Lightning port is on the back, and the device works as a wired keyboard while you are waiting for it to charge.

Okay, askingformymom, Apple will happily sell you one, in either black or white, or Amazon, and other places… you’d probably have to buy a usb to lightning cable as the one included with the mouse is usb-c to lightning or just buy a usb-c to usb adapter( which is cheap) . I use a Kensington trackball, I find it more comfortable than a mouse, works over usb just fine, will do Bluetooth too, but, whatever you and your elderly mother prefer and works for you is okay by me

Any mouse will work, however if you want a genuine Magic Mouse I'd suggest contacting www.macsales.com, they specialize in Macs and should easily be able to supply the mouse.
Just to add, you could use a 3-Button wired mouse. BelKin and Logitech both sell them starting for under $10.
Newer devices use USB C which is still USB however faster and more effective than USB 3. It has a different connection types but that is not big deal. You can find these adapters from a multitude of sources including Amazon, Ebay, MacSales, etc...
To get the Mac to recognize the new Mouse you need to pair them, Apple explains how to do this in Connect an Apple wireless accessory with Mac - Apple Support
Thank you, I will try that! I had ordered a new one from Amazon, but it's rechargeable. She has an older iPhone with the old USB cable, and does not have the new 'brick' for the new style charging cable that came with the mouse.
2nd option: If I get her the new brick for the charging cable, will the new mouse work with her old iMac? Is there a process to sync the new mouse with her iMac or does it happen automatically once the mouse is charged?
Sorry, I'm an old school PC user but don't know anything about Apple products!
No mouse, iPhone or iMac comes with a "brick" so I'm not sure what you are referring to there. Perhaps you can provide a picture of what you have and we can go from there.
LOL, I used PC's for many years until I'd had it with always updating this or that and worrying about viruses. For the past 20+ years been strictly a Mac guy and never have to worry about any of that stuff any more. Not trying to "sell" you, just saying....
Thank you so much for your help. The 'brick' (wrong name, I know) is the square piece that plugs into the electrical outlet. Older iPhones used the standard one with the big USB port. Newer Apple devices apparently use one that has the smaller USB port. I think I can solve this by getting the new adapter. Still not sure how to get the iMac to recognize the new mouse, I'm hoping that it will 'see' the mouse if it is charged up and placed nearby. Apple is good at making things easy, so my fingers are crossed!
Thank you! This cleared up some things that I didn't understand.
