Can't make new volume on disk error code 61

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 2013 A1398. When i tried to start it only a file folder with a ? in it. I started it and pressed command +r to download recovery from internet. When I go into disk utility, the only thing I see is disk 0, and below that OS X Base System. When i try to make a new image I get an error: Unable to create (file name).dmg error -61. Nothing else i try to do in disk utility seems to be functional ie. buttons greyed out. I Just learning about Mac computers,so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hmmm, old info tells me...

error -61 wrPermErr: write permissions error

New info tells me...

-61 Watchdog timer detected unresponsive application, shutting down the system. Troubleshoot for stuck application, startup item and any loading preferences. Boot to Safe Mode by holding ⇧shift on boot which disables most startup items and daemons. If the problem does not occur, try a new user account.
