2021 IPad Pro device bricked by OS update

I made the mistake of starting allowing an OS update on my 2021 iPad Pro and the screen went black and stayed that way (not off, if the lights are out you could see it dimly glowing. Now my iPad Pros is a digital photo frame that only knows how to display a photo of the apple logo. I have tried:

  1. rebooting (get the apple logo),
  2. using the up/down volume buttons then pressing start until it reboots (get the apple logo)
  3. letting the battery drain then recharging then rebooting (get the apple logo)
  4. connecting the iPad to my Mac to try to fix it from there (Finder doesn't see it, iTunes no longer exists)

I have a support appointment but seems I am probably headed for a reset and having to reinstall everything, losing all custom settings in my apps.

Is there any solution for this? It happens every.single.time. I allow an OS update. My iPad Pro is only 2 years old, that seems early even for Apple to start bricking it to force another purchase.

Connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

2021 ipad Pro 2T WiFi + cellular AKA TOP OF TOP OF THE LINE got the “black screen of death” for no apparent reason; would not reboot, I took it to the store and they said there’s nothing they can do to fix It. It has been meticulously cared for and cased, no damage internally or externally and I’m just out $2200 before it’s even 2.5 years old and my AppleCare expired in December? A replacement costs $599 but goes in the system as a “repair”, so I can’t use Apple Card 0%APR financing… I’m livid and I deserve better.

Your 2021 iPad Pro is still fully supported for hardware repairs - although in the described circumstances the repair will be chargeable.

Devices can and do unexpectedly fail at any time - while others can endure for many years if the battery is well cared for.

Unfortunately, hindsight is a perfect science. Had you extended your AppleCare+ plan in December, you would have simple recourse to making a claim - and your iPad would have been replaced for a small excess/deductible fee.

Allas, you have suffered an out-of-warranty failure, without benefit of an AppleCare+ plan to make good the problem that you now have.
