Hi guys,
I want my Mac to stay open when I walk away for a short time. Yes, it will default to screensaver, but the doesn't seem to stay active long and when I return I have to enter my password again. It's annoying.
iMac 24″, macOS 13.4
Would suggest changing some of the setting in System Setting >> Lock Screen
Especially the First 3 Setting in below image
Disable "Require Password…", i.e., Set it to "Never".

I could be mistaken but, the OP seems to want the screen saver running without having to type in the password on their return.

See Phililips' screen shot. There's a setting to disable a required password.
On a personal note regarding No Password
With, No Password, anyone passing by could potentially get access to the computer.
As an Admin Account - I will leave this to your own conclusions.
I do Trust my wife, trust out 2 daughters and son, less so Grandson ( for now ) and the 2 Great Grand children well even less as this is related to Sensitive Information of my computers

I thought you could do what the OP wants only if you establish a non password startup. But that's just a vague memory.
