I'm on a MacBook Pro using Ventura. Yesterday, the Messenger app changed its look. in the grey space to the left of the message, there is an icon. I may be wrong, but I think previously, it looked different. Was this an upgrade yesterday, and is this the normal look now?

It's not Facebook Messenger-- it's the Message app that's part of Ventura.
I'm using the latest version of Facebook Messenger (downloaded through the App Store, last updated 2 days ago). It doesn't look anywhere similar to the screenshot that you shared. It still looks pretty much the same to how it looked like a year ago, at least on my end.
