I just got the ipad 10th gen, and using my first generation apple pencil, i knew i needed the adapter. i bought it from best buy from apple, for $9. it doesn’t fit my apple pencil at all, as it’s very loose. i’ve tried switching but still no luck. Is there a reason?

Your illustrated USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is the adapter that you require. You need to ensure that the long Lightning connector, beneath the cap of the first generation Pencil, is fully engaged by pushing the connector all the way into the Adapter’s Lightning socket.
When properly inserted, there should not be a gap between the Adapter and Pencil.

Your Apple Pencil should positively connect to the Lightning side of the Adapter - as should the USB-C side connect to the USB-C/USB-C cable used to connect the Pencil to the iPad.
If you cannot make a positive connection between the Adapter and Pencil, one or other may be damaged.
You might consider returning to the retailer, from which the Adapter was purchased, to exchange the Adapter. Otherwise, you would be well advised to visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your Pencil, Adapter and cable(s):

The cable part fits perfectly, but not the apple pencil. I just went and exchanged it, and it’s the same thing 😭 am i buying the wrong thing or something?!
