what is the best password manager to use on my MacBook Pro

What is the best password manager to use on my MacBook Pro. The Louisiana DMV was compromised and we have been advised to change all passwords. I am now thinking about using a password manager and am looking for recommendations.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.6

Thanks for the tip with BitWarden. I've been using 1Password for a long time, and version 7 still works in Ventura. But they're aging the app out soon and there are no more perpetual license versions coming.

I simply don't think any password manager is worth pay a forever subscription for. So BitWarden will likely be my replacement app when 1Password 7 stops working.

I was thinking of using that one when Apple added their own password manager.

BUT! It only stores your password data via iCloud. Yes, it's encrypted, but we do not ever allow personal data to be stored on a remote server. With no way to backup your password data as a file on your local drive, and/or choose your drive as the only place to store the data, it was automatically out as a viable choice.

As a caveat, I also haven't looked at it since to see if an option to store your password data only locally has been added.

Edit: And now that I actually looked at BitWarden's site, that one is also out. You have to create an account in order for your passwords to be stored on their server. No way.

Reborn a Mac,

You make a sound argument for using the Keychain Access app on the Mac, and using Settings-> Passwords on the iPhone/iPad.

While this is a basic password manager, it should be sufficient for many users, ESPECIALLY if they use the ‘Notes’ field for supplementary information, such as password recovery questions and answers, contact phone numbers, etc…

And if a user just needs the basics, it should work very well.

But on the iPhone/iPad it does not support storing secure notes with images, such as drivers license, passport, etc …

And while you can finagle text information, such as credit cards, social security numbers, badge numbers, building access codes, etc… it does not make that as easy as a full service password manager.
