My MacBook does not recognize French language anymore (as second language)

Hi,

I am French but I spend a lot of time abroad... Then, I bought a MacBook Pro 15" equipped with a QWERTY keyboard.

I write in English and in French.

To write without too much difficulties in both languages, I selected the US international - PC language for  keyboard input. For having the French dictionary, I selected the CH language because it's the only French formatted with QWERTY)

This worked quite well, without the need to change the keyboard input, the US International - PC allowing me to write the subtleties of French (accents, cedilla, etc.)

Recently, I installed the 13.4 version of Ventura, and since French looks to have disappeared.

Each French word (or almost) is systematically auto-corrected by an English word. Yes, with the ESC key I can cancel this auto-correction, but it slows down the writing considerably, and honestly, stopping at every word is simply impossible. Then, it ends with incomprehensible sentences.

I went to the keyboard settings, but I can't find a way to fix it. Every attempt is a failure.

I'll send you screenshots about my current settings.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your time to give me an answer.

The < Correcting spelling automatically > is set ON.

And the US English and French languages are set.

I also check the User/Spelling folder in the Library. I do not have any English or French .dic or .aff file…? [Screenshot below]

By the way, English is the main (system) language of my Mac.

I am lost.

Thanks.

No, you can't see the stuff which Apple provides, you will only see .dic or .aff if you add a third party dictionary downloaded from the internet.

Does it work OK if you set Spelling to just French instead of Automatic as below.

If you are talking about Word, everything different, so let me know if that is the case.

Thanks Tom.

Yes, I know it is different for MS office. So that is not what I am talking about here (word works spelling works fine, so far).

Non, French works perfectly if set to Automatic.

So, I understand the solution is to keep French (as a second language) set to Automatic?

By the way, I have a different pop-up window. I do not have the command: < Automatically switch to a document's input source >

Sorry, I cannot insert the screenshot. I tried in JPEG, in PGN, TIFF... cannot upload.

Thanks again for your time and patience Tom.

Yes, if that works for you.

I just notice something is wrong in the screenshot you sent earlier. You have CH Swiss French on your list of Input Sources. But the keyboard picture there is wrong, because Swiss French is QWERTZ and not AZERTY. But it should not matter since you actually use US International PC, you can remove Swiss French if you want.

As said on first post, I have a QWERTY Keyboard, not AZERTY. That is way I selected the CH language Keyboard.

I removed it now.

I have only the US international PC Keyboard as input (as it is perfect in both English and French language).

So far, everything seems to work correctly.

I have misspelling correction of english, now. Let's see with some time...

Thanks again Tom. really appreciate your help.

Take care
