iPad Storage Issues

iPad 5th gen, iOS 16.3.1

I noticed my photos were taking up almost 60 GB of storage which I thought was weird since I didn't have many photos on my iPad so I checked and I only have 255 photos and 9 videos. 2 videos were over 4 min long so I deleted them and the rest were under 30 sec then I cleared recently deleted. After all that there were still over 50 GB worth of storage being taken up by photos. I then noticed the size was slowly going up by increments of about 120 MB every couple of seconds. As I was typing this I was restarting my iPad and when I checked storage photos had gone back down to 3.3 GB, but should I still be worried?

Tl;Dr, photos were taking up 60 GB and was slowly rising with only 255 photos and 7 videos and it went back to 3 GB after restart. Should I still be worried?

A restart is often all that is required to resolve an isolated software issue. iOS/iPadOS and iCloud are designed to minimise the risk of data loss. Sometimes infrastructure storage (iCloud) and iPad can get out of sync’ - and while preserving your photos and data, can appear to behave strangely.

Unless the problem recurs, you should have no reason for concern. If the problem does recur, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support:

Official Apple Support

Alternatively, and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
