I realize I'm a few months behind, but in case anyone else happens on to this posting.

I've gotten around this a couple different ways. The first, add the printer again using the Generic PCL driver, and set that version of your printer as your default. Generic PCL doesn't have the option to print in Color. The second is to enable CUPS admin through terminal, and change the default settings for your currently installed printer...

In Terminal enter: cupsctl WebInterface=yes

Then in a browser window go to localhost:631

From there select Printers, and your printer by queue name, and choose Set Default Options from under the Administrator drop down. From there you can change just about anything you'd like.

Some options may not be present depending on how your printer was mapped to your Mac. Hope this helps.

Yes it does go back to default...

Even B&W will use color ink(?)... You have to use draft to cut down on color cartridges as well

I'll should be in the first print window when printing. Some printers, the example is an Epson, has this option:

99% of my printing is done with with a quick: CMD-P then <RETURN>

Have you considered that the "Last Used Settings" are going to waste a lot of paper and ink because people will forget to turn color off, or other special settings off before the next print job.

Also, there are times when MacOS doesn't give you a Printer Dialog page. It just prints!

( think Finder... select or preview a document... then hit CMD-P )

Bottom Line is: We'd like to change some setting, and then make those become the Default.

The "Default" vs "Last Used Settings" option is sticky meaning persists every time the Print Dialog invokes (until you change it).

So one solution would be to allow Presets in the "sticky" list.

  • Default
  • User User Preset XXX
  • Last Used Settings

Or another solution would be to allow users to simply change the sticky "Default"

ok so im in chrome.. command + p -> more settings -> print using system dialog... (shift+command+P) -> default settings or black and white, or any preset i choose (even ones ive made) -> close the print settings window -> command + p -> more settings -> print using system dialog... (shift+command+P) -> reset back to color

it just wont stay on B&W for default.. always resets to "print in color"

and yeah when i say color is used for black and white, i mean if you have it on color, and there is black on the page, it will mix colors to make "black" instead of just using the black cartridge.. or so i have been told online
