I have a MacBook Air M1 which we’ve had for a couple of years and works well but won’t connect to our home Wi-Fi. We have an excellent mesh deco network which works well with every other device in the house. The MacBook says it’s connected but it isn’t.

I have a Deco mesh WiFi setup at my house, and it works fine with my 15" MacBook Air. I'm connected to the 5GHz band just fine.
Do you see your MacBook Air connected when you check the Deco app?
Also...just to be safe, have you updated the firmware on your Deco mesh router? (Asking because my sister has one I installed over a year ago, and it hadn't been updated until I asked about it a couple weeks ago).
Have you tried the "usual" things, like rebooting your MacBook Air, and toggling the WiFi off then back on 30 seconds later.
And also...does your MacBook connect via WiFi in some other location like a friend's house?
Is the problem WiFi connectivity, or Internet connectivity?
If you're connecting to the Internet through WiFi, the WiFi needs to work – but other things need to work, too. For instance, your computer needs an IP address, a subnet mask, a gateway address, and DNS addresses. Usually, it would auto-configure these by requesting the information from your router. And it helps if the router is not set up to deliberately block traffic coming from your computer on the basis of your WiFi MAC address.
Determining whether the problem is with (1) associating with the WiFi access point, or (2) communicating with the Internet once the computer is associated will help to narrow down where the issue might be.
Does the network even appear on the Airport menu?
Have you tried setting up the Mesh on 2.4 Ghz? 5 Ghz works very poorly through floors and walls.
