No cellular connectivity when traveling to S Africa or Italy - iPhone SE 2nd gen (2020)

My iPhone SE 2nd gen could not run navigation software (like GoogleMaps) using cellular data when traveling abroad in South Africa and Italy. My boyfriend's iPhone SE 3rd gen ran navigation software just fine using cellular data. Our phones share the same mobile plan (Xfinity) and both have Xfinity's Global Pass for international travel. Phone settings and iOS were identical.

Why would the iPhone SE 2nd gen (2020) be unable to connect to cellular in South Africa or Italy? Is the iPhone SE 2 not reliable for cellular connectivity when traveling abroad in Europe or South Africa?

Has anyone had these issues too? Or, been able to fix these issues?

If you're experiencing cellular connectivity issues when traveling to South Africa or Italy with an iPhone SE (2nd generation) from 2020, there could be several factors at play. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Ensure that your iPhone is Carrier unlocked and compatible with the cellular networks in South Africa or Italy. If your device is carrier-locked, you may need to contact your carrier to unlock it for international use. How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier
  2. Verify that your iPhone supports the frequency bands used by the carriers in South Africa or Italy. You can find this information on Apple's official website or by contacting your carrier. Identify your iPhone model
  3. Make sure that international roaming is enabled on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Roaming and toggle the "Data Roaming" option to the ON position. About cellular data roaming options for your iPhone and iPad
  4. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  5. In some cases, your iPhone may not automatically connect to a local carrier. You can try manually selecting a carrier by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Roaming > Carrier and choosing a compatible carrier in South Africa or Italy.
  6. Reach out to your mobile carrier's customer support to ensure there are no restrictions on your account that may be causing the connectivity problem. They can also provide specific troubleshooting steps and confirm the availability of international roaming in the countries you're visiting.

It's also worth noting that using Wi-Fi networks or obtaining a local SIM card can be alternative options for internet connectivity while traveling abroad.
