I have been searching for a solution to stop Addressbooksourcesync from bogging down my iMac.

I found an eleven year old solution that is still valid. However some changes may be needed due to the fact that present macOS is 13.6 and not 10.7.

In short:

  • Backup Contacts and save it on the Desktop
  • Open Activity Monitor and stop the process AddressbookSourceSync
  • Go to Library/Application Support and locate the folder AddressBook
  • Drag the folder on to the Desktop
  • Open the Contacts app; it should be empty
  • After a while the Contacts app populates presumably from iCloud.
  • If not: import the backup to Contacts.
  • Open Activity Monitor to review.

I post this notice as an update, as I could not find a recent post.

Hello CER74,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you noticed that AddressbookSourceSync is using a lot of your computer’s resources. We are happy to help.

Many times restarting can resolve many concerns. Please use the steps here to restart your Mac: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

"Restart your Mac

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.
  • If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”"

Please use the steps here to quit this process or app: Quit an app or process in Activity Monitor on Mac - Apple Support

  1. "In the Activity Monitor app  on your Mac, under the Process Name list, select the app or process you want to quit. An unresponsive process is marked with (Not Responding).
  2. Note: The Process Name list is not available in the Cache tab listings.
  3. Click the Stop button  in the upper-left corner of the Activity Monitor window (or use the Touch Bar).
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • Quit: This is the same as choosing File > Quit within an app. The process quits when it’s safe to do so. If quitting the process could cause data loss or interfere with another app, the process doesn’t quit.
  • Force Quit: The process quits immediately. If the process has files open, you may lose data. If the process is used by other apps or processes, those apps or processes could experience problems.
    • To see if a process is used by another process, choose View > All Processes, Hierarchically."

These steps may help. Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.
