Cannot add printer to child account

I can't seem to be able to add a printer to my children's accounts on MacBook pro. The printer is successfully added to both adult accounts, so don't think there is any issue with the printer

When I go to add the printer in the child accounts, it can see the printer and I enter admin username/password to edit the printer settings. It then finds the correct driver etc and then I click on add printer - it does all the right things and looks like it is adding the printer, but once it finishes the printer is still not there.

Very specific to the child's account, so seems like there is something that is preventing it being added because of the account type, rather than anything wrong with the printer.

Can anyone help?

So partial success! There wasn't anything in screen time settings, but I made him 'admin' instead of 'standard' user and all of a sudden the printer appeared!

I checked it was this (rather than other things i messed about with) by turning the user back to 'standard' and then back to 'admin' again. And the same for my other child, turning them from 'standard' to 'admin' and again the printer appered

So when they are 'admin' the printer appears, but when they are 'standard' the printer disappears. I haven't been adding or disabling any printers, just changing their user type and checking printer settings.

Is this normal behaviour - that 'standard' users don't have access to printers but 'admin' users do?

Did you also disable Screen Time and check with Standard user?

Yes, but disabling screen time on and off didn't make any difference. The only thing that is working is making them admin.

I wonder if it's something to do with the fact that I set them up as child account way back when apple didn't really do family sharing and all that, but you could have a child account on macOS. They've moved away from that and are using family sharing and having apple IDs for all your family. But as the accounts were set up before all this I wonder if it's got confused somewhere along the line. I could start a fresh account for them, but that seems too much hard work :)

I'll leave them as admin for now - they are young enough that I trust them not to mess about with it. Once they become teenagers however....

I didn't think Printers were a per-user thing. I'm not at a setup where I can check.

Assuming I'm correct and the printer should show in every account once added in System Settings, perhaps the reason you can't add is the same reason it doesn't show up normally.

Are they managed accounts with Screen Time? I've never used it, but maybe there is something in there.

Hi, yes the printer shows up when searching for new printers, so his account is available to use, so it's not a printer setting thing.

His account is managed by screen time (although it's within the time when he has access), but I agree it's something to do with screen time.

When you go to add it, it looks all fine and then when you go to add the printer it seems happy that it can do it, but just doesn't do anything

Might disable screen time, etc, and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks
