I have an iMac 27" desktop and I run Mail version 13.4. In the last few weeks any pictures that are sent (recipes, etc) down open - I get a "?" instead. What do I have to do to have the pictures automatically open in the email?

It sounds like your Mail may be set up to block remote content or be using Privacy Protection. This article can provide you with some information about that: Use Mail Privacy Protection on Mac - Apple Support
Do you see a message at the top of the email stating that you can download remote content?
That info can help narrow down what's causing this.
