I can no longer attach photos to email

iMac OS 15.0.1 Sequoia. Using Apple Mail, I can no longer attach photos to email, not via Attachments or drag and drop from my photo library. I get Unknown Error "The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below: IMG-0240.JPG"

Attach and drag and drop both worked for me just now. I'm in 15.1, but it should be the same. I was attaching and dragging from Photos -- is that what you did?

The first things to try are these:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Those are the most important things to try first. Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon. To use the "Attach" function, you would have to designate this new Library as the System Library in Settings>General. Don't turn on iCloud for this Library.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Crazy things happen for lots of reasons. For example, your apps store things in cache folders, and they may fill up and interfere with the operation of the app. Some apps install things without telling you. Re-stating clears out some of those things. ,A "safe" re-start does that and also turns off some 3rd party processes.

So sometimes things go along just fine, but suddenly something crazy happens, The things I suggested attack these sorts of things from different directions.

I'll try your suggestions as time allows. … please forgive me if I don't get back for a while.

People here don't work for Apple--we are just users like you. Some of us hang around here from time to time in case our experience may help someone. So don't worry-- no one is just sitting here waiting…

At age 88, failing short-term memory is a big problem for me. I got lost somewhere along the way when following your instructions (I know, I know, they’re clear as crystal). I started trying other things and eventually got back what I lost, namely the ability to attach and drag/drop pix. I wish I could tell you what the solution was, but I have no idea.

Thank you for responding. I will print your instructions and take them with me to my next life. Gotta find asbestos printer paper first though.
