accessibility settings voice control calls and video defaults

Hi - my 90yr old mother is in hospital in Scotland, I am in the US - her only communication is her iphone. I have managed to get her to set up the settings for voice activation, but when she tries to make a call, the default is the phone line, and she can't make international calls. She can make international calls on whatsapp. Is it possible to change the default contacts o that siri uses whatspp as the default communication app and contact info there? the fewer steps the better. Please help if you can I'd be forever grateful.

Hello Shazz1e,

We'd be happy to provide you with some information. If you ask Siri to perform an action without mentioning an app, Siri uses the default apps on your device; but you can use Siri to perform actions with third-party apps.

For example:

"Hey Siri, call [contact]" - will use the Phone app to place a call to the chosen contact.

"Hey Siri, call [contact] using WhatsApp" - will use WhatsApp to place a call to the chosen contact.

That said, you have to make sure that WhatsApp is enabled in Siri settings. WhatsApp has some resources on how to do that: How to use Siri with WhatsApp

Thanks for this - I thought if i long press the call button in the individual contacts, and select whatsapp that I could over write the other call functions every time, but it still tries to use cell. I know it's small but the additional "by whatsapp" seems to be too much for my 90yr old mum to handle. I was hoping that I could just automatically set the phone to circumvent using the cell service and use the whatsapp app but it doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks though.
