I have been using an external USB HD on my MacBook pro, but now, the drive doesn't mount and First Aid fails every time. When I plug the drive into a chromebook, it mounts and all of its content is visible on screen. Do I have a virus? Is my USB hub the problem? The mac always works like a charm and this is uncharacteristic.
Plug the external HD directly into your MacBook pro and see if it mounts. Most likely, it will. Then your problem is the Hub. It it a hub with an external power supply? If not, that is the problem. Get one that has its own power supply. That's all I use.
Open Activity Monitor, Show all Processes>Sort on Name & see if fsck is running.
