Unable to reply to forwarded SMS text messages

Hi,

I have an iPhone XS and iPhone 14. One for work and one for home. I use the same Apple ID on both. They are both set to forward texts to each other. The are both set to start new messages with the XS’s number.

The problem is, sometimes I respond to Android users I get the following error:

Number not available. Which number would you like to send the message with.

And then 2 buttons : Primary or Cancel.

iMessage conversations work fine.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

iPhone XS, iOS 16

You're correct that the Text Message Forwarding feature in iCloud requires devices to be signed in with the same Apple ID. However, it's important to note that the Text Message Forwarding feature specifically allows you to forward SMS and MMS messages from your iPhone to other Apple devices, such as iPads, Macs, and other iPhones.

If you previously had Text Message Forwarding working between two iPhone 7 devices, but it's no longer functioning with a different iPhone model, there could be a few reasons for this:

  1. Different Apple IDs: Ensure that both iPhones are signed in with the same Apple ID. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud on both devices and confirm that the Apple ID is the same.
  2. Text Message Forwarding enabled: On the iPhone that you want to forward messages from, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. Make sure the device you want to forward messages to is listed and enabled. If it's not listed, try disabling and re-enabling iMessage on both devices.
  3. Stable internet connection: Text Message Forwarding relies on a stable internet connection to forward messages between devices. Ensure that both iPhones have a reliable internet connection, either through Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  4. Updated software: Check that both iPhones have the latest version of iOS installed. Software updates can sometimes bring improvements or bug fixes that could affect the functionality of certain features, including Text Message Forwarding.

If you've verified all the above settings and are still experiencing issues with Text Message Forwarding, you may want to try resetting network settings on both iPhones. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note that this action will remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and other network-related settings, so you'll need to re-enter them.

If the problem persists, it's recommended to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide specific troubleshooting steps based on your devices and settings to help resolve the issue.

  • Please use Primary.
  • When using the same Apple ID for both iPhones they act exactly the same. So, better to have a different Apple ID for your work phone and personal phone. Alternatively, don't log in to your work phone with your Apple ID if you don't want to mix up your personal matter with your work phone. In that case, you do not require a second Apple ID or iCloud account.
