What do you mean by unknown? Do you mean photos not taken by you, but sent to you in Messages?


In iOS 15, Apple introduced Shared with You - Use Shared with You on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support.


Content shared within Messages would appear in other apps as well (Photos, Music, Safari, and so much more). Meaning photos people have sent you would also appear in your Photos app. If you don't like this (or want to toggle it off for Photos), you can do so!


  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap on Messages
  3. Tap on Shared with You


From here, you can either toggle off Automatic Sharing to stop everything or toggle it off for certain apps. I personally did not like it within Photos either, so I have Photos toggled off but everything else on!
