iMovie audio went silent

My iMovie audio went silent after converting a DVD of home movies to mp4 format using a new subscription to Video Converter X2 app. I converted the DVD, dragged the clips to my desktop and into my iMovie media holding queue.

The DVD was silent film but it had a musical background track. I. have separated the DVD audio track from the silent video.

How do I restore my iMovie audio while retaining the old home movie clip as part of the iMovie project? Is there a third-party plug-in to remove?

Apple's "If you can't. here sound in your iMovie for Mac project" help tips don't get me to a solution.

It appears that the Video Converter X2 app may be causing a conflict on your Mac, as the issue is not confined to iMovie. You might try removing Video Converter X2 to an external drive and see if that resolves it.

Meanwhile, you can try the following:

Resetting the System Management Controller

Try resetting the System Management Controller (but no longer available for the new M1, M2 computers):

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM

Try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM:

Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Hi,

Not all Mp4 vids work with iMovie. It should be Mp4/AAC (AAC stands for Advanced Audio Coding). Open the video clip with QuickTimePlayer and do a Window/Show Movie Inspector. Check the audio format and see if it is AAC.

Even if it is AAC, run the clip through the free download Handbrake, that will re-render the clip to Mp4/AAC by default.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to

complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. See if you get sound.

My issue may be a bit more complicated. I did as you suggested. I checked the audio format via QuickTimePlayer. It was AAC.

The I downloaded HandBrake and ran the clips through the app.

Then I reinserted one in the iMovie project. Still no audio.

In fact...my MacBook Pro has no audio from any source. It happened after I downloaded the Video Converter X2 app and ran the DVD home movie through it. There is no audio from clips in iMovie, songs in Music, videos of grandkids in Photos, a movie DVD, etc.

Somehow, my computer audio is shut down. I go to System Settings and all appears normal. "Mute" is not activated there or in iMovie.

Any suggestions? I appreciate your help. I'm adrift!
