Can’t play sound to locate lost AirPods

When I lost my AirPod Case with one earbud in it, I was not able to play a sound to it using Find My.

When I finally found them, I tested this, and as far as I can tell the case needs to be open to be able to send a sound. Obviously, if it’s lost, the case is likely closed. Is there any way around this that would actually make the find my app useful for locating the AirPods?

Like everyone else here I found this never works (2nd generation, in the charging case). I just spent 2 days searching for my AirPods. The 'find my' app tells me the recent location (which was very useful in eventually finding them) but was constantly in 'sound pending' and never connected to them. This was the same on MacBook and also my iPhone. Now they are here right next to the MacBook, the same thing happens - it's constantly on 'sound pending - will play when connected'.

TL;DR - this 'find my' feature ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT WORK!!!

Hi Lissy_12,

Thanks for the quick response.

Unfortunately this does not work (at least for me, and for others throughout the Community pages).

When I open the Find My (/Devices) app (on any Apple product) and tap on AirPods/Play Sound, I get a message of "Connecting", followed by one that says "Sound Pending: Will play when connected."

The problem is that the AirPods NEVER connect, unless I happen to find the AirPod case and open it in front of my iPhone or Apple Watch.

I've experimented with this, with the AirPods directly connected to my phone. After using them for a call, I'll take the earbuds out, put them back in the case, set the case down right in front of my phone, then try to locate it using "Find My". No luck. The signal only plays if the case is open right in front of the phone, which defeats the purpose.

Others have mentioned this issue throughout the Community pages as well. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks!

This doesn’t work. I misplaced my AirPods at work and when I checked the find my iPhone app, there was no sound that played and only displayed the last known location which shows my workplace but the sound remains pending as they’re both in the case. Therefore I agree that this service is pointless and respectfully… USELESS.

Hi Chi_MM,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! Depending on your AirPods model, you can also play a sound to the charging case as listed below:

Locate AirPods in Find My

You can play a sound on your AirPods to help you locate them if they’re out of their case. If you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also play a sound on the charging case.
* On iPhone or iPad: Open the Find My app , tap Devices, tap the name of your AirPods, then tap Play Sound.
* On Apple Watch: Open the Find Devices app , choose your AirPods, then tap Play Sound (requires a Wi-Fi or cellular connection).
* On Mac: Open the Find My app , click Devices, select your AirPods, click the more info button, then click Play Sound.
* On iCloud.com: Go to iCloud.com/find, sign in with your Apple ID, select All Devices, select your AirPods, then click Play Sound.
Your AirPods play a sound for a few minutes to help you locate them, or until you stop the sound. If your AirPods aren’t connected to your device and you don’t have the Find My Network turned on, the sound plays the next time they connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.
