Can't get out of split screen in Mail

Suddenly, no matter what I do, I get the split screen in Mail, and it covers almost the whole screen. I'm not in full screen, have unticked the box in Mail Preferences for not getting split screen, and don't any other suggestions. I've shut down several times, restarted and looked for any other advice. I've been using Mojave on my Macbook Pro (Retina display) for ages, nothing changed for Mail recently, nobody else uses the computer. Recently got a message that iCloud couldn't hold any more items, but I don't understand how that could be nor how it would pertain to the split screen. If you have any ideas, please send them along. I can't even see the list of messages, because only one is so large that it obscures everything else. Thanks!

Same issue on my iPad - but only in email, regardless of which mail system: apple's Mail, or AOL in my case. Not an iOS Split Screen: just the split when I open my email on either email app. Only email. All the suggestions are about the iOS Split Screen. This phenomenon is only in (any) email app, yet neither of my two apps have splitting a screen as a config option in Settings.

Seems lots of folks have this issue, but replies are always about the iOS version. Not.

(Although, perhaps the prior iOS operating system release (14.0?) would undo the issue. Not gonna try.)
