Apple wants access to my Google account

Why?

Why is Apple interested in my gmail, contacts and calender? I do not want to give them access, why should I? What does that have to do with privacy when Apple will be able to read, send and delete my PRIVATE emails and contacts??

iPhone XS, iOS 16

Because they wrote it confusing. Okay thanks, I got it know, but I think I have the right to be worried if they are literally telling me that someone wants access to my account if I want to continue the account - im not an Insider

Because you asked for that. But if you now do not want that, deny that access.

Why is Apple interested in my gmail, contacts and calender?

Apple would prefer not to know, and has gone to some effort to avoid knowing, and has recently gone to more effort to know yet less about that, with the recent availability of advanced data protection.

I do not want to give them access, why should I?

Well, then don’t. Seriously. Deny that. The only thing here that’ll happen when you deny this access is your access to Google mail and such from your iPhone will break. this because you decided to deny access, or didn’t want to store the credentials.

What does that have to do with privacy when Apple will be able to read, send and delete my PRIVATE emails and contacts??

Not to be pedantic, but Google certainly wants all that info. That’s the fundamental reason why Google runs free hosting. That grants access to your data, and your metadata; your contacts, activities, peers, etc. To the what is an immense online marketing entity.

But to your concern, for your iPhone to do what you have requested here—to access Google mail, calendars, or such—you are being asked to provide access credentials, where Apple will then store those either locally on your iPhone or in iCloud Keychain when enabled. Which is what Google is now telling you, and that display presumably from within a Google app.

How Apple stores credentials is included here: Apple Platform Security - Apple Support

In the PDF available there, start reading at page 113. Or read the whole thing, if you’re interested in security and privacy. Particularly advanced data protection, starting on page 115.

More generally, for your own safety and privacy, Apple has a guide: Personal Safety User Guide - Apple Support

If you do not give access to iOS then you will not be able to get and send gmail from your iPhone, access your Google contacts on your iPhone, or view your Google calendar on your iPhone. That is certainly an option. No one HAS to send and receive gmail from an iPhone. Or view their gmail contacts, or view their Google calendar. Or access their Google Drive files from their iPhone.

You are misinterpreting what the message says. It doesn't say Apple will be able to read, send and delete your emails, it says the operating system will be able to do this. You want this, this is how the iPhone's email app communicates with your Gmail account so you can read, send and delete your emails..
