iCloud Photos: is it possible to only upload chosen specific photos/albums rather than everything?

As the title …

I would like to make use of iCloud Photos BUT I do not want all of my photos uploaded. Is it possible to upload specifically chosen photos/albums to upload?

That’s crazy. Using the cloud for safe keeping of the photos we want to keep seems a reasonable ask.
