Apple Watch Ultra Open Water Swim - Wrong Distance, Faulty GPS Track

This is my third time posting in Apple Forums regarding the AWU. I bought the AWU the day it came out. I am using it to track my daily open water swim trainings out in the Aegean Sea. More than 50% of my swim sessions have wrong data. AWU calculates extra distances due to faulty GPS points and bad tracking for some reason.

Example: last weekend I swam 7km whereas AWU thinks I did 8.5km which is impossible. When I checked the map, I see that the GPS track has bad points, loops, turns etc, whereas I swam continuously straight without stopping. There wasn't any current, wave, wind, nothing, flat and calm seas. Same problem keeps happening during most of my open water swim training sessions. Attaching some screenshots.

Dear Apple, I need a solution for this, it has been months. I love my AWU and it's smartwatch features but unfortunately it's GPS simply doesn't work and is not reliable in the sea. And I rely on this device to improve my competitive timings.

When the GPS works, I would say 40% of the time, it gives a perfect GPS track and map, however it's absolutely not reliable.

Notes:

  • I am swimming freestyle stroke, I know that GPS signals disappear under water thus I don't swim breaststroke. All these problems occur during freestyle swim.
  • I use "Precision Start" function and wait for perfect GPS lock. Doesn't help.
  • I don't wear any other metals etc on my body, I simply swim with my Speedo and that's it.
  • Running the latest Watch OS 9.5.2

Looking forward to hearing from you Apple, oh and please do not suggest that I reset, re-calibrate my device. I did those a couple of times including unpair, full reset, recalibration etc. None of them work.

I have a similar issue, but when I swim in the indoor pool. "Funny" thing is that the Watch used to work fine in the first three months after I bought it in November 2022.

It would be interesting to know whether there are no swimming issues with Apple Watch Ultra 2. It didn’t take long and only one year after the release of Apple Watch Ultra the Apple Watch Ultra 2 was released. And notice: So many significant upgrades are not there.

Maybe there is a hardware issue which was not admitted and just fixed with Ultra 2?

Me too! :-( And I'm using an Ultra 2.

I just did a leisurely two hour open ocean swim, covering 5 miles, and the watch registered only 106 yards. The GPS tracking is from only the first 20 minutes or so of the swim, during which I had done a few laps of lagoon before entering the open ocean and swimming to the next lagoon (and doing a few laps), and back to the start.

That whole open ocean section (both directions) and the second lagoon, totally absent from the GPS tracking.

I am so so SOOOO disappointed with the capabilities of this watch. :-((((

#UltraPoor is more like it. :-(((((

I have the same problem as well and it’s frustrating. I have the problem both in pool swim and open water. I realize there are two different metrics involved between the two but I can’t get an accurate reading on any of it. I tried open swim in the pool and it only records, about 60% of the length that I swim it’s a 10 yard pool I do 20 laps making sure that the watch is not in the exact same space not that that should matter and what should be 200 yards comes up to 128 and it’s not consistent . Some days it seems to work other days it doesn’t I guess the question becomes should I take the Watch into the Apple Store which is a joke with itself when they tell you you have to wait a week and a half to get an appointment lol altogether I regret having spent this amount of money on an apple ultra, thinking it was going to be accurate .

I took it to the Apple Store short before my one year Apple guarantee was about to expire.

The first time they faked the exchange and I got my old Watch Ultra. I went back and told them about it. The second time, I got a new and unopened watch. However, there are still problems recording the swimming lanes in the indoor pool. The problem has not been fixed. It doesn't seem to be a priority for Apple. Or: maybe the fix is the Watch Ultra 2.
