You cannot.
You must plug it into power if its under 50% battery.
You don't need an update to charge the iPad.
Unless you are using the referenced Camera Adapter, charging should not be an issue.
If you are using an adapter or connector between the iPad and the charger remove it, and use the charger directly.
Sorry this genius system has rotated the image for no reason, but with a careful head tilt you'll discover the reason for the problem even though not using a Camera adapter, seems it stops charging with regular cables too. Anyways as always the most obvious solution fixed it.... Turn it off and back on and have it connected to a laptop when it restarts rather than a power socket and away to goes. Go figure.
