How to best condition battery of new Apple Trackpad 2 & also check Battery Health Status (not current battery level charge)

Greetings,

I am wondering about the best way to condition a new Apple Trackpad 2 to break it in most effectively - or if this is helpful in this case... In other words, is there a best practices to help ensure the longest life of the device using a specific strategy for a brand new just-out-of-the-box Trackpad 2 as well as the best way to charge it moving forward (after initial setup and first time charge.)

Also, I would like to know how to check on the battery health of Apple Trackpad 2. I know how to check the battery charge level but I am interested if there is a way to check battery health.

Sincerely,

Maartin

Hey MaartinGr,

At present, there's not a detailed way to break in the battery of a Magic Trackpad. The battery should perform optimally out of the box and be charged whenever necessary.

Like most Apple products that use batteries, the Magic Trackpad uses a lithium-ion based battery. The Why Lithium-ion? page discusses why this is a good option for rechargeable power.

As far as testing the battery health of a Magic Trackpad, that's not currently something that's available. If you'd like to see it potentially added in a future software release, please provide Product Feedback here.

Take care.

Can you offer any insights or best practices for charging a new (L-ion) device to optimize its life ?

It sounds as if you've been using rechargeable batteries since the NiCad days. Those batteries required a lot of management in order to remain functional. Lithium-ion batteries are not like that. The only thing you really need to concern yourself about is letting it run completely down and then leaving it that way for a long time. That might result in it never taking a charge again. There is no longer a recommendation to "condition" batteries or to "calibrate" by letting them run down then charging them up.

Charge it when it starts to run down or when you have a chance.

Hey MaartinGr,

Nothing specific in the way of best practices. It'd be difficult to quantify behavioral charging changes with a Magic Trackpad as a single charge can last for a month or longer, depending on use. With that being said, you could check with Apple directly to see if they have any specific ideas as far as when and how to charge your Magic Trackpad for optimum battery lifespan.
