USB-C port for charging iPad Pro, freeing up the port on the iPad for other accessories.
Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad is powered exclusively by the iPad. While the Magic Keyboard has no battery of its own, the USB-C connector in the spine of the keyboard is intended to provide a pass-through charging connection to the iPad’s Smart Connector.
The Magic Keyboard’s USB-C connection cannot be used with other accessories.
In using the Keyboard USB-C connector for charging, the iPad’s own USB-C port can be used for other purposes without the need for adapter or hub to permit simultaneous connection of external power. For example, the iPad can be directly connected to USB storage - or an external display that supports USB-C Alt Mode via USB-C or Thunderbolt.
