Iphone connected to both cell service and WiFi, but nothing will update/download

My Iphone is updated to the latest IOS. It shows it is connected to cell service and WiFi (the same WiFi I'm using on the laptop to post this question).

No apps will refresh. I just deleted an app to test if reinstalling it would fix the problem (on that app), but now I can't get the App store to open.

I have shut the phone down twice and restarted it as I've tried different things, but nothing works. I was trying to find out the specific IOS I have, but I can't get that to show up either.

Phone calls come in, and I can call out. Text works.

What's up with data?

iPhone 11, 16

Hi KNHNEK,

If you are unable to see the iOS version you have in Settings on your iPhone, you can connect your iPhone to a computer to see the software version in Finder or iTunes by following Connect iPhone and your computer with a cable.

If you are having trouble downloading apps on your iPhone, you can follow the steps in If you can’t download or update apps on your iPhone or iPad.

As it relates to your network, you can also try the following:

  • Test using only cellular.
  • Test using another Wi-Fi network.

Check for and temporarily disable any VPN as seen in Check VPN (Virtual Private Network) and third-party software to help resolve network connectivity issues.

Take care.

Hello KNHNEK,

Although everything is working OK on your partner's iPhone, each connection between iPhone and the network is individual so it may be best to delete the VPN and see what happens without it. That will rule out issues there.

Since this happens specifically with cellular data, we'd also recommend checking your cellular data settings for any specific apps that are having issues. The following is from View or change cellular data settings on iPhone - Apple Support.

"Set cellular data use for apps and services

Go to Settings > Cellular, then turn Cellular Data on or off for any app (such as Maps) or service (such as Wi-Fi Assist) that can use cellular data.

If a setting is off, iPhone uses only Wi-Fi for that service.

Note: Wi-Fi Assist is on by default. If Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular data to boost the signal. Because you stay connected to the internet over cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you might use more cellular data, which may incur additional charges depending on your data plan. See the Apple Support article About Wi-Fi Assist."

Another tip from that same article is to make sure that Low Data Mode is not enabled since that can impact your cellular data usage. Check out the following.

"Choose cellular data options for data usage, performance, battery life, and more

To turn Cellular Data on or off, go to Settings > Cellular.

To set options when Cellular Data is on, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, then do any of the following:

  • Reduce cellular usage: Turn on Low Data Mode, or tap Data Mode, then choose Low Data Mode. This mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks when iPhone isn’t connected to Wi-Fi."

All the best.

Thanks,I only mentioned the IOS version because everyone always asks - it's the latest. I keep it updated. I can see it now, its 16.5.1

I can download apps. That's not it. Its that fairly often, nothing works. I try to read my news apps. Won't refresh. I try to look at Instagram, won't refresh. I try to look at email. Won't refresh.

I use a VPN, but so does my partner, with the same phone, same system, same VPN, and this never happens on that phone.

So maybe its a bug in my phone.
