16.5.1, 16.5.1 (a) and iPad Pro (11-inch) , 2nd generation

Updated my iPad Pro with the latest iOS updates. Here are my list of challenges (there really is not enough wine or vodka in the world today....):

  1. GPS doesn't work in any app
  2. Receive messages that say my AppleID is different on my tablet vs cloud
  3. Can't send a text with only characters or even an attachment to non-Apple users
  4. Under Message settings, there's no way to select "Send as SMS" when iMessage is unavailable
  5. I keep getting asked to log into an AppleID account which I haven't used in over 8+ years

Here's what I have done in trying to fix the above challenges:

  1. I have signed out / signed into current and existing AppleID
  2. I have updated my password for above mentioned AppleID
  3. I have reset Network Settings
  4. I have reset Location & Privacy
  5. I erased All Content and Settings
  6. I backed up to iCloud and erased all data and settings
    1. Then I restored the iPad

And nope, nada, zilch, zero on any resolution on the above challenges set forth by Apple to my iPad with their recent iOS updates.

Suggestions? Other troubleshooting?

TIA

iPad Pro (2nd generation)

1) Do you have a WiFi+Cellular model iPad - or a WiFi Only model?

Only WiFi+Cellular models have GNSS/GPS capabilities. While independent of Cellular functions, GNSS/GPS is an element of the Cellular chipset that is absent from WiFi Only models of iPad.

2) Do you have an iPhone - or just an iPad? If exchanging messages with Android or non-Apple devices, you’ll need to use SMS/MMS messaging.

An iPad, whether a Cellular model or not, is not capable of directly accessing Cellular Voice or SMS/MMS Messaging features. An iPad with either WiFi or Cellular connectivity alone can only access IP-data services. If you have added a DataSIM and Cellular plan to a WiFi+Cellular model of iPad, the number associated with the SIM card is only used to identify your account for billing purposes. This number is not used for making calls or sending messages.

However, when paired with an iPhone, the capabilities of iPad broaden to include access to Cellular Voice and Messaging services of the associated iPhone - relayed to the iPad over WiFi using Apple’s continuity features.

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID - to send SMS/MMS messages (green bubbles) from your iPad you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your iPad on your iPhone...

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages >

  • Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices.
  • MMS Messages - set to ON (if MMS required)

Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON

If a VPN is installed/enabled on your iPad, temporarily disable it - and/or remove the VPN App from your iPad. Then perform a forced-restart of the iPad.

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists, your WiFi router may be unexpectedly blocking access to some internet resources. You may find that a restart of your WiFi Router, followed by a restart of your iPad will clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad as before.

Also check to see if your iPad is using the WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can cause issues with network access and routing. You may need to disable this feature - at least temporarily. Private Addressing is enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Use private Wi-Fi addresses in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 - Apple Support

Thank you for your suggestions and pointing to other helpful information.

Yes the iPad is WiFi only - GPS even with an approximate location worked 100% prior to latest iOS updates. My approximate location was found with Google Maps, Maps and other apps which would pinpoint my location.

To your tips:

  • Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad: Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON"
    • Checked earlier before posting and it's showing ON everywhere
  • On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices. MMS Messages - set to ON (if MMS required)

    • Checked earlier before posting and it's showing ON everywhere

Thank you for your response.

Still a "Nope, we have a problem"

WiFi Only models of iPad have no GPS capabilities with which iPad Location Services can derive location. This fundamental difference may significantly impact your ability to use mapping Apps - in particular if real-time positioning (e.g., a moving map) is required.

WiFi Only iPad models can only “infer” their location from a database lookup of neighbouring WiFi networks for which the geographic location is known, or the geographic location of your public IP address. For static applications in urban locations, where the location of IP public IP addresses and WiFi networks are known, an “inferred” location can be relatively accurate. However, in rural locations, or when using a Cellular/Satellite/VPN connection, location accuracy of an inferred location [if it works at all] may be very inaccurate.

All this has significant implications for non-static mapping applications. If you need to have moving maps or precise location, or have future flexibility to do so, you may need to consider a WiFi+Cellular model of iPad. Choosing a cellular model does not commit you to adding a cellular service plan for the iPad, but ensures that you have immediate access to GPS/GNSS positioning services.

As is, your available options are:

  • Substitute your WiFi Only iPad for a WiFi+Cellular model; this does not commit you to provisioning Cellular service for your iPad, but does provide the needed GPS functionality for the iPad.
  • Add an external GPS receiver to your WiFi Only iPad. These are often used in marine, aviation and vehicular applications - and can be either directly connected via Lightning or via Bluetooth. Their are various third-party manufacturers, of which two are BadElf and Garmin Glo.

Thank you for your reply.

I understand what you are you telling me regarding WiFI vs WiFI/Cell iPads. Alas, if I were in a position where I could drop a few hundred dollars on an iPad with both WiFi and cell and have the ability to pay for a plan to use cell service I would. But alas, I am not, so....

Right now, I am concerned with having an iPad that's lost its ability to function as it once did PRIOR to the latest iOS updates.

All the items I listed in my original post used to work and now do not.

The iPad can't even acquire date / time automatically from the Apple servers. Most vexing!
