Quicktime Player Playback Problems

Screening older footage (Analog 4x3) using Quicktime Player 10.5. The video will freeze, delay or hesitate using Quicktime Player 10.5.

Please let us know what the media file properties are (codecs etc.), through a report from Invisor Lite (or other tool based on MediaInfo).

The footage is stored on an external drive 14TB with a Thunderbolt connection.

That’s fine, and not a reason for QuickTime Player to bark at certain files.

Would it be helpful to update to QT Player 7 even though that seems to be the only Quicktime Player update.

QuickTime Player 7 was for older Macs with macOS versions that could run 32 bit apps. It is abandoned software since 2016. It is not available on macOS Catalina 10.15 (2019) or later. Note that QuickTime 10.x abandoned some functionality of earlier QuickTime 7, including support for legacy codecs.

Is there an updated QT Player for Ventura and MacBook Pro M2?

As an OS-bundled application, QuickTime get automatically updated (if needed) with macOS itself. There is no manual version selection for QuickTime Player.

The codec for this footage is DV/DVCPro-NTSC.

I tried some DV/DVCPro-NTSC files that I could find, and they played fine in my QuickTime Player in Ventura.

Do I live the fact there's freezing, delays and hesitation with the current Quicktime because my MacBook says all software is updated.

Possibly there is an issue with the media file itself? Not all issues have its origin in the software. That being said, some software is better at overcoming file errors than other software.

Maybe I should get Elmedia Player Pro instead of using Quicktime? Do you have opinions, concerns, or advise when comes to Elmedia Player Pro?

It is reasonable to try other playback software – if playback is what you are interested in at this time. Some third party media player software may have features that you really like. I would suggest different ones though: VLC or IINA. I know of its existence, but I haven’t tried Elmedia recently. The Pro upgrade path ($) seems needed for some app features, while my suggested softwares are really free.

I have all such old DV clips in an archive. For playback I have exported them as HEVC with ffmpeg (ask for details, if necessary. Handbrake is another alternative).
