I updated my iMac and now I don't have Safari, nor any other applications in the applications folder, but have been using firefox, and other apps. I've restarted iMac, still no Safari or othere apps in application folder. Should I go to my backups?

Do I need to take my iMac to the genius bar? Should I look in my backups for missing Safari and other apps?

Look in the Application folder shown in the Finder Window's sidebar, not the vestigial Applications folder in your home directory which is always empty. There is no means of updating your Mac that would leave the indicated Applications folder empty, or devoid of Safari which is a standard install.

My 2015 iMac 21.5" Retina runs beautifully on macOS Monterey. I now have an internal SSD, but with an external SSD as boot drive it still ran far better than the original old HDD. It's now our backup Mac for our two 2020 27" models

2015 is no where near too old to work with, you just have to learn what to do then methodically go about doing it.

Of course if there is some sort of physical damage, that has to be dealt with first.

At this point what's the harm trying? You've already conceded it's a lost cause so there will be no harm no foul:

An OS update should not have any affect on the Applications folder. It may affect third party apps that require a license or possibly if you get caught in the 32 bit to 64 bit "trap"

How did you update and from what version to what version? What's the year of your Mac?

You can restore from backups any time you wish, but that may just "mask" the problem. You need to determine what went wrong. Just be sure you keep your backups safe and I suggest you temporarily disconnect the drives to prevent "good" data from being changed by a defective OS update.
