The media should be in your iTunes Library, for two reasons:

  1. that has always been the only method for adding music to an iPod Classic
  2. it's the first line of backup, should the iPod fail, or need restoring (and you should have had a second backup, to back up the computer)

This means that if your iPod needs restoring (i.e. using the Apple Restore feature), you would the use the copy of the music in your iTunes Library to add back to the iPod. If you do not have the music that was on it in your iTunes Library (or Finder on a newer Mac), you have probably lost it, although you could try reading this tip from user turingtest2; Recover your iTunes library from your iPo… - Apple Community to see whether that helps you recover it.

The only other method is to go back to your original source for each piece of music. For music:

    • purchased from the iTunes Store, sign into your account and download your past purchases from your account page
    • purchased from other online stores, go to your account page with that store to download those purchases again
    • ripped (copied) from CDs, re-rip the CD
    • from any other online source, go back to that source
