Connecting Apple TV with no remote

I recently got an Apple TV (3rd Gen M# A1427) from a friend. It did not have a remote with it. I have a remote (m#A1962) I can use with it. After following all the directions of pairing/unpairing, the led light blinks when I press buttons but nothing happens on screen. The Apple TV isn’t connected to the WiFi as I can’t get anything to work in order to connect it. I need to connect a remote and connect the Apple TV to my network.

Anyone have a solution?

I have a remote (m#A1962) I can use with it.

Unfortunately, that will not work. That remote is for use with later models only.

You may be able to use a software remote on iPhone, after it has been set up with a regular compatible remote.

The Apple TV (3rd generation) needs a functional remote to set up the Apple TV Remote widget in Control Center.
