“Unsafe” Wi-fi airport connection

I tried to connect to wi-fi in Haneda International but Safari wouldn’t allow it. It would NOT let me connect. I connected by using Chrome to bypass, but then I felt—insecure—Un-secure? What could I have done to make the connection safer on my end? The map app needs an exact location, and I NEEDED that airport map connection. I wasted valuable time downloading a browser I don’t use. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max if that helps. First iPhone, first trip to Japan/Haneda, and I’m (mostly) clueless. PS, my Delta app couldn’t update until I returned to US. Useless, but could that have been my iPhone settings? idk! Thanks.

Public Wi-Fi networks are typically open to the public. Requiring a network password would make them inconvenient to the point of uselessness, while conveying essentially no benefit because any passwords would become common knowledge in no time.

There is no need to "feel insecure" about using public Wi-Fi networks, provided that you do not engage in any network activities that might be considered confidential. Certainly using the Maps app (or whatever you needed to view the airport map) isn't terribly confidential, other than perhaps divulging your location. Yes your iPhone would be "discoverable" to others using that public network but even the potential for exploits is very slim.

It's much easier for someone to look over your shoulder as you are typing in passwords. That is an extremely common, low-tech exploit. Lots of people simply aren't aware of their surroundings. Don't be one of them.

Probably, but if Safari does not meet your requirements get rid of Google Chrome and use Brave.

I neglected to answer that question. No, most likely that app is only available in the US or perhaps (conversely) it is restricted in the area you happen to have been when attempting to download it. Or, perhaps the public network's location was obscured or otherwise not being adequately transmitted to Apple.

In any event you have no control over any of those factors.
