Whatsapp backup is stuck at 0%

I read another post which is now closed for contributions:

Sign out and Sign in your icloud account on settings.

What I'd like to share is that I tried to follow this advice, but when it asked me to keep a local copy of some stuff and that the content of wallet would be removed I backed off and cancel the sign-out process, and for some reason, that did the trick. So I didn't need to fully sign out.

For context, my whatsapp backup page was saying "Last Backup: Waiting for iCloud"

And I also deleted the last whatsapp backup from the iCloud menu.

So now it says "Last Backup: Never"

I'm listing all the actions cause I'm not sure what really got it unstuck.

Now it says "Preparing" but there is no progress, so maybe I'm stuck somewhere else. :(

Edit to add, yes, it was stuck, but I found out how to fix it.

In case it gets removed:

  1. start chat backup from whatsapp
  2. switch to iOS settings (without closing whatsapp) and disable whatsapp within iCloud
  3. go back to whatsapp chat backup and you'll see an error that iCloud must be enabled
  4. switch to iOS settings (without closing whatsapp) and enable whatsapp within iCloud
  5. go back to whatsapp chat backup and it will start

Yes, pretty incredible, especially since the article is from Jan 2023, 6 months ago! I can't believe it hasn't been fixed.
